How to do sizing for BW on HANA

Size your BW on SAP HANA System

Determining needed hardware resources is usually done by the SAP hardware partner based on order information you submit. You provide this information using the SAP HANA In-Memory DB Sizing Guideline attached to SAP Note 1514966, SAP HANA 1.0: Sizing SAP In-Memory Database. SAP Note 1514966 also contains a script get_size.zip which will assist in calculating the data footprint of the SAP systems.

Alternatively, use the SAP QuickSizer tool to calculate the system memory requirements for your business warehouse data. You will find a questionnaire specifically for SAP NetWeaver BW powered by SAP HANA in this tool.

This table offers rough estimates of system hardware needs.

Source Data footprintHANA Appliance RAM requiredHANA Appliance Disk required
0.5 TB315 GB1.53 TB
1 TB577 GB2.81 TB
5 TB2.56 TB12.8 TB
10 TB5.06 TB25.31 TB
You can also calculate your own HANA RAM needs using one of these formulas:
RAM = (Source Data footprint - 50 GB) * 2 / 4 + 90 GB
or
RAM = ColumnStore Tables footprint * 2 / 4 + RowStore Tables footprint / 1.5 + 50 GB
Though the HANA database uses in-memory technology, disk space is required to store persistently data used in memory. The disk space must be large enough to hold:
Before- and after-image versions of data (2xRAM)
Database log (1x)
Operational space (1x)
At least one process image (in case of software failure) (1x)
One data export (1x)
So, the required size of disk space is 5x the size of the data in memory (RAM).

BW Admin tasks for HANA - Did it change?

No. Day to day operations for SAP NetWeaver BW on SAP HANA does not change. Modeling and administration can continue as before with the same SAP NetWeaver BW tools, but the workload will be reduced because of simpler data models, the elimination of aggregates and reduced query tuning. However, customers are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the modeling, monitoring and administration capabilities in SAP HANA

Requirements to implement BW powered by HANA

What is required to implement SAP NetWeaver BW Powered by SAP HANA?

Customer must be on SAP NetWeaver BW 7.30 with SP 5 applied and running unicode. The process to move to SAP HANA is a simple database conversion and does NOT require an SAP NetWeaver BW application upgrade or migration. This means that for a BW customer, there are no changes to data flows, transformations, data models, queries, DSOs, InfoCubes, etc. In addition, since BW Analysis Authorization is supported, there are no changes needed to key authorization objects like roles and authorization rules. And if a customer is using NetWeaver Identity Management for provisioning and single sign-on functionality, SAP HANA will integrate with their exsiting setup. The result is innovation without disruption which, in turn, becomes a customer’s competitive advantage.

History behind SAP Strategy to go HANA way

SAP was an early pioneer in the concept of using in-memory technology for improving performance and columnar databases to gain high data compression rates. TREX and SAP Enterprise Search were the first solutions to use these concepts. Building on the strength of these early products, SAP then released the very successful SAP NetWeaver® Business Warehouse Accelerator (SAP NetWeaver BW Accelerator).

With SAP NetWeaver BW Accelerator firmly established in the market, SAP expanded its vision to other purposeful ways to leverage this in-memory technology to further benefit its customers. SAP’s focus on Business Intelligence (BI) led to the decision to combine the BI functionality from SAP BusinessObjects with the in-memory analytical engine of SAP NetWeaver BW Accelerator, creating an accelerated BI solution called SAP BusinessObjects Explorer, accelerated version for SAP BW.

With a focus on openness and heterogeneity, SAP then evolved SAP BusinessObjects Explorer by including data integration. This allowed the solution to access and accelerate any data, and all information beyond structured data in SAP NetWeaver BW. This latest wave of SAP BusinessObjects Explorer, accelerated version, was released to market to in Q2 2010. Building upon the success of this accelerated BI solution, SAP has delivered SAP HANA for real-time analytics and a new class of applications, such as SAP BusinessObject Strategic Workforce Planning and SAP Smart Meter Analytics (available in H2 of 2011), powered by SAP HANA.

SAP BOBJ Vs SAP HANA - Differences

Difference between SAP Business Objects Explorer Accelerated & SAP HANA?

Explorer, accelerated version, currently uses a data-source-agnostic version of SAP NetWeaver BW Accelerator, to provide in-memory acceleration of analytic data. The high-performance SAP HANA database is the next generation of in-memory computing that complements today’s Explorer accelerated solution with enhancements and additional functionality, including a more complete suite of BI tools, and the replication and acceleration of transactional data for real-time analytics. By substituting HANA in place of the data-source-agnostic version of SAP NetWeaver BW Accelerator, customers can gain substantial acceleration, along with additional calculation capabilities. In short, customers can look forward to SAP HANA as the platform for delivering accelerated analytical solutions.

HANA Vs SAP BWA

Difference between SAP NetWeaver BW Powered by SAP HANA and SAP BW Accelerator?

SAP BW Accelerator (SAP BWA) was the first step in bringing the innovation of in-memory to data warehousing. A portion of SAP NetWeaver BW data was replicated to a separate ‘accelerator’ server in order to improve query performance in SAP NetWeaver BW.

In contrast, SAP NetWeaver BW Powered by SAP HANA actually runs the entire BW application on the SAP HANA database, which improves data load and calculation performance in addition to query performance.
